Faculty of Education is one of the academic units of the University of Gondar.  The Faculty of education as a legal entity of the University appeared to be a budgeted academic wing in the 2009/10 fiscal year. The Faculty is assumed as a vital portion of the teaching –learning process of the University which takes a prime mission for preparing highly qualified professionals in the fields of education, conducting research and community Services. The Faculty had begun providing education and training since the beginning of 2010/2011 academic year with two departments i.e. Educational Planning and Management and Special Needs Education. During that time the Faculty of Education had a total of ten academic staff and three support staff. The first batches of the Faculty of education were 113 of which 95 were males and 18 were females. The students were from two sources i.e. students who directly joined the University from preparatory secondary school for fulfilling higher education entrance points and students drawn on advanced standing basis while students of special needs were selected from preparatory Secondary school students. The first batch of the Faculty was graduated in 2013. A total of 97 students were graduated from both departments in regular undergraduate program. So far six batches have been graduated since 2013.Since its establishment, the Faculty is striving to expand its scope and service. The number of departments and programs are increasing from time to time. Currently the Faculty has three departments in undergraduate program including the department of Adult Education and Community Development which has been launched in 2015. The department has received its first batch 33 students in 2015/16 in undergraduate program.  In the same academic year the Faculty has opened three post graduate programs. These are: MA in Educational Planning and Management, MA in School Leadership and MA in Special Needs and Inclusive Education. Besides, the Faculty began undergraduate extension program in Educational Planning and Management in 2014/2015. Currently the Faculty has 47academic staff and 22 support staff. From the academic staff, ten are assistant professors, 27 lecturers and 16 academic staffs are PhD candidates& 5 MA students. Form the total number of academic staffs, 9 of them are females and the rest are males. The Faculty has 20 support staff of which three are males and the rest are females. The current active staffs are engaged in teaching, research and community serves. Quality education, Indigenous knowledge for education, Special needs and Early Childhood car and education, leadership in schools were some of the areas of research so far. The faculty members also provided community services specifically training for education sector such as school teachers, Principals, education officers. In this academic year (2018/19) the Faculty has a total of 1,642 students in all programs of which 359 are in undergraduate regular program, 272 in summer undergraduate program, 24 postgraduate program-MA regular, 10postgraduate program MA in Extension and 977 postgraduate program in summer
