The College of Education at the University of Gondar was established as a School of Education in 2009/10 and officially opened its academic programs in the 2010/11 academic year. It began with two undergraduate programs: Educational Planning and Management (EdPM) and Special Needs and Inclusive Education (SNIE). With the later addition of Lifelong Learning and Community Development (LLCD) and a Pedagogy Unit, it assumed college status.
The strength of the College lies in its collective, highly qualified, and diverse staff. Currently, it employs 48 faculty (37 male and 11 female), of which 12 (11 male and 1 female) are PhD holders; 25 (17 male and 8 female) have Master’s degree and 11(9 male and 2 female) are currently on study leave pursuing their PhDs.
Some of the programs being offered at the College include:
- Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (PGDT), Postgraduate Diploma in School Leadership (PGDSL) and Postgraduate Certificate Program for School Supervisors (PGCPSS), available in extension, and summer formats.
- Regular undergraduate programs in Educational Planning and Management (EdPM), Special Needs and Inclusive Education (SNIE) and Lifelong Learning and Community Development (LCCD).
- Master’s degree programs in SNIE, and EdPM.
- A PhD program in Education has been recently launched with specializations in Education Policy and Planning; Educational Leadership and Management as well as Higher Education Administration.
The College has undergone a great transformation in its programs, staff development, and student intake capacity. It has been strongly committed to realize the three goals for which it was established: Quality of teaching, Research and community engagement technology transfer. As a result, the College has made substantial contributions in:
- producing trained manpower at different academic and leadership levels for the national education sector
- developing a strong research culture with a focus on problem-solving initiatives,
- delivering impactful community service projects widely recognized by beneficiaries
- building strong international partnerships with organizations such as APPEAR Project, Mastercard Foundation and Nurture Project.
